UTAH (Gray News) – A bride-to-be in Utah was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck the day before her wedding.

According to officials with the Utah Department of Transportation, Alex and Lydia Kessinger were trying to move a king-size mattress to their new home by having Lydia lie on top of it in the back of the truck to keep it from flying away.

While driving 50 mph, the mattress fell off the bed of the truck, taking Lydia with it.

“Despite suffering significant road rash, she managed to reach the side of the road without being hit by oncoming traffic,” the DOT said in a news release.

Even with her injuries, Lydia was able to walk down the aisle to marry Alex.

The Kessingers shared their story as part of National Secure Your Load Day on June 6.

Officials remind drivers that items not properly secured can fall out and hit other vehicles or pedestrians, causing serious injuries or fatalities.
