KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man sparked an Amber Alert by taking a woman’s children within 24 hours of his release for a domestic assault arrest.

Court records show that Lyrick T. Bryson, 27, now faces two counts of kidnapping, domestic assault and tampering with a victim in connection with Thursday’s Amber Alert.

As of Monday, Jan. 26, Bryson remains in custody at the Clay County Jail. Prosecutors have requested a $150,000 bond.

A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with a bond reduction hearing set for 9 a.m. Thursday.

First arrest: Afternoon domestic assault

The Kansas City Police Department responded to an apartment around 1:25 p.m. Thursday with reports of a disturbance. They attempted to enter after hearing a woman scream “help me” inside, according to a probable cause statement.

Officers say that as they kicked in the door, Bryson opened it and stepped out. He refused commands to put his hands behind his back and physically resisted officers before being handcuffed.

Police note that the victim told them Bryson punched her multiple times and tried to strangle her. She escaped without losing consciousness.

The woman also reported that Bryson threw her to the ground, causing her back to hit a table, and broke her phone when she tried to call 911.

The victim told investigators that Bryson had assaulted her before and threatened to kill her and her children. He was arrested for domestic assault, but was released later that day.

Second incident: Amber Alert

Around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, court records reveal that Bryson showed up at the woman’s home again and told her to come with him to the police station. He wanted her to recant her assault charges.

The woman got into the vehicle with her two children, according to court records. The two had been in a romantic relationship for only a few weeks. Bryson is not the children’s father and had never watched them alone.

Police say they were ultimately called to NE Barry Rd. near Maple Woods College with reports of another disturbance.

The victim told officers she and Bryson argued in the car. When she asked to get out, he pulled over, let her exit, then got out and punched her.

As she tried to get her children from the back seat, court records show that Bryson jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off - with both the front passenger door and rear door still open.

The victim told detectives that Bryson made comments about killing himself. She feared for her children’s safety.

Amber Alert and arrest

Police say an Amber Alert was issued for the two children and the gray Infiniti, which was registered to Bryson.

They note that Bryson was found in the vehicle near 99th and Cherry St. He resisted arrest again before being taken into custody. The children were safe and unharmed as their mother was taken to a nearby hospital.

Detectives indicate that Bryson invoked his right to an attorney and refused to speak with detectives.

Criminal history

Court records show Bryson is on parole for robbery. He also faces a pending domestic violence charge from November 2025 in Blue Springs involving a different victim.

In the probable cause statement, investigators note that Bryson “has shown himself to be a threat to the victim as he assaulted the victim in these two separate incidents within a 24-hour period.”

The Clay County court records were filed on Friday, Jan. 23.
