‘It made me sick to my stomach’: Wife, half brother accused of dismembering man
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (WLS) - Two family members were charged after bags of dismembered human remains were found in a lake in Illinois.
Illinois State Police said partial remains of 38-year-old Dalewayne Turner were found inside the Plainfield home where he lived with his wife, Robin, and half brother James Adams.
Other parts of Dalewayne’s body were found by boaters more than 160 miles away in Lake Mattoon.
Dalewayne’s wife and Adams are both charged with concealing a homicidal death and dismembering a human body.
The pair was arrested last week, days after Dalewayne’s remains were found.
“It literally made me sick to my stomach,” Chystal Mann, Dalewayne’s cousin, said.
Mann says her family is in total shock over the allegations, saying she called Robin the moment she found out.
“I was on the phone with her 10 minutes before she was arrested, and I said, ‘Robin, what’s going on? Why am I hearing all this crazy stuff I’m hearing? Where’s Delwayne?’ She says, ‘Well, he’s still in treatment.’ And then she said, ‘Let me call you right back.’ I never talked to her again.”
Mann said her cousin was beloved by his family and had a big heart.
“I remember Dalewayne always being there. If I needed help with anything around my yard, anything, he would be there to help,” she said.
Prosecutors revealed an extensive and thorough investigation in connecting Robin Turner and James Adam to Dalewayne’s death, including a 911 call made by Dalewayne brother, Steven Turner.
Steven Turner told investigators James Adams said he “grabbed a knife and stabbed Dalewayne several times.”
Police later detained Robin Turner and James Adams.
During questioning, Adams said, “The one thing I will say is that I did it, but I did it out of self-defense. I will tell you guys that.”
Robin Turner, in speaking with investigators, said James Adams admitted to stabbing her husband multiple times after a fight at their Plainfield home, and he placed Dalewayne’s body in the freezer.
Court documents also revealed text messages between Robin Turner and James Adams discussing purchasing carpet cleaner and bleach.
“My heart breaks because I never reached out to him,” Mann said. “I feel bad because I believed her lies that she told our family, and we thought he was safe in a place where he should have been safe, but he wasn’t. Even in his own home, he wasn’t safe.”
Robin Turner and James Adams are scheduled to return to court later this week.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe online fundraiser has been set up to cover Dalewayne’s funeral expenses and other costs.
