KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man who was convicted of second-degree murder over two decades ago is headed back behind bars for another crime.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday that 65-year-old David Degerald was sentenced to 33 months in prison without parole for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Degerald was arrested on June 26, 2025, after officers with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department responded to a home on N. Oakley Avenue for a domestic disturbance.

There, a caller said he saw a man back a truck into the deck of a nearby house then leave the area.

Police located a vehicle that matched the description and made a stop. Degerald, the driver of the truck, stepped out of the vehicle and was placed into handcuffs.

Court documents say officers smelled alcohol from Degerald’s breath and when he was asked how much he’d had to drink, Degerald responded, “too much.”

While officers took inventory of his truck, eight rifle rounds and an extended magazine with 28 rounds of 9mm ammunition was found.

Degerald, who was convicted in Clay County in 2001 for second-degree murder, is not allowed to possess ammunition.
