Kansas grocery chain works with Olathe leaders to plan metro area comeback

OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - After nearly two decades away, the Dillons grocery brand is set to make a return to the Kansas City metro.

Dillons Food Stores announced on Friday, Oct. 10, that it plans to introduce a Dillons Marketplace to the City of Olathe. The move is part of a broader regional expansion plan.

To mark Dillons’ return to the Kansas City metro, the company said its flagship location is set to go in near College Blvd. and S. Lone Elm Rd.

Company leaders noted that the site is strategically located near several schools. The move also reflects a strong community interest in seeing the brand’s return.

“We are excited to announce Dillon’s expansion into the Kansas City area, our first Dillons Marketplace in Olathe,” said Steve Dreher, Dillon Stores Division President. “While the specific details are not complete, we are currently collaborating with the City of Olathe to finalize plans for the building and site and are thankful for their partnership. This announcement marks not only Dillon’s return, but the beginning of our journey in the KC market.”

Dillons said the new location marks a $40 million investment for the building, sitework, infrastructure and workforce.

“We’re thrilled about this amazing project coming to Olathe,” Olathe Mayor John Bacon said. “It’s another huge win for our community, and we can’t wait for Olathe to enjoy this one-of-a-kind marketplace. We’ve always had a wonderful relationship with Dillons, and we look forward to their return to our community.”

Dillons said the new Marketplace is expected to elevate the shopping experience with a variety of fresh products, modern amenities and friendly service.

Company leaders said they hope to reintroduce Dillons’ reputation as a go-to destination for grocery needs.

The news comes just ahead of the grand opening of Dillons’ newest location at The Crossings@KU in Lawrence.

The last location in the Kansas City metro closed in 2008. Dillons has not yet announced an opening date for the Olathe location.
