Jackson County legislators pass measure to put stadium sales tax vote on April ballot
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Jackson County voters will have the chance to decide on extending a 3/8-cent sales tax to fund the stadiums for the Chiefs and Royals.
In a legislature meeting Monday afternoon, a measure passed 8-1 to put the vote on the April ballot and extend a tax that has been in place since 2006 for another 40 years.
It’s a move County Executive Frank White cautioned against pointing out negotiations are ongoing. White wants firmer information before it gets placed on the ballot.
“I’m supportive of the two teams. I played with one for 18 years and I don’t want them to leave Jackson County but we’ve got seven more years on the lease where they have to play here in Jackson County. That’s why I didn’t know what the rush was,” said Frank White.
The Royals and Chiefs announced Friday afternoon that the teams would build a downtown ballpark and renovate Arrowhead Stadium, respectively, if Jackson County voters passed such a ballot measure. Monday, the teams jointly thanked legislators and White for their decision.
The packed meeting Monday included union workers who are excited about a new stadium and the jobs that come with it. But they emphasized the details will be important.
“We know that it’s not end game. Voters still need to go to the polls and vote on this and we still got to hold the Royals accountable make sure they give us a seat at the table negotiate with community benefits agreements, so this is step one,” said Terrence Wise.
A 10-day window has now opened for White to veto the measure. Legislators have expressed the need for vote in case Frank White would veto the ordinance. White says he’s unclear what his next move will be but says he’s obligated to watch out for taxpayers in Jackson County.
“I want to express my respect and understanding for the roles and responsibilities of our esteemed legislators,” said White in a release. “The decision before them is not an easy one, and I am very aware of the immense political pressures involved in such significant civic decisions.
“I understand the complexities and challenges of these discussions and want to reassure everyone that my commitment to collaboration remains strong. Regardless of the vote’s outcome, I am dedicated to working closely with legislators, our sports teams and all stakeholders.”
