Police said they have a woman in custody after she fired shots from an apartment window.
This all began unfolding Friday morning at the apartments at East 10th Street and Highland Avenue on Kansas City's east side.
No one was injured, but several vehicles apparently were struck by gunfire. When officers arrived they saw a woman screaming out of the window and evidence that shots had been fired. The woman initially refused to come out, police said.
Police carrying shotguns surrounded the complex before taking the woman into custody about 9 a.m.
The initial report of gunfire came at 7:16 a.m. Friday. The shot was later upgraded to a barricaded gunman situation as police feared a sniper firing indiscriminately from a window.
"We're trying to gather what exactly happened," Kansas City police Sgt. Marissa Barnes said.
With numerous people living in the area and children walking to school, police said it was incredibly fortunate that no one was injured.
"We're very lucky that no one was hit by any of the shots she fired," Barnes said. "It was said she was shooting in the area and at the ground so I'm guessing her intent was not to really hurt anyone. But still we were very lucky in this situation."
