(Meredith/WCCO) -- A Missouri man broke into a home in Minneapolis and held a child hostage for nearly eight hours before taking his own life.

Before the suspect broke into the home, police received calls from neighbors reporting a man running across their lawns.

One caller said the man broke into his home too, before fleeing on foot.

The 38-year-old man from Missouri had broken into the house by kicking the door down, according to a neighbor.

"Saw SWAT moving in, SWAT moving in the back, and also the sheriff's bus ... trailer in the back too,” the neighbor said.

There were a number of children inside the home during the break-in who ran out of the house and flagged down officers who were already on alert.

Police soon discovered that a seven-year-old was still inside.
