Proud mom shows off new baby chimp at Kansas City Zoo

She's a first-time mom but Teeoni proudly showed off baby George to onlookers at the Kansas City Zoo on Monday afternoon.George was born early Thursday and came a bit earlier than expected. As a result, zookeepers didn't witness his birth but are pleased at how well the newborn and his mom are bonding. Teeoni's twin sister, Teetoo, and their mother, Rachel, are assisting. As zookeepers fed the entire 13-chimp troop on Monday, Teeoni brought her baby boy out to cuddle with him. A zoo donor named the baby chimp. Teeoni did well during her pregnancy. Zoo officials said she was cooperative during routine checkups and ultrasounds. Both mom and baby will remain under close observation, but all appear to be healthy and thriving. The zoo didn't want to separate them from the regular group, and wanted to put them together on a nice sunny day. George's father will later be determined through blood tests. The last chimp birth at the zoo was six years ago. The zoo is open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends through Oct. 31. Starting Nov. 1, the zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.Copyright 2014 KCTV (Meredith Corp.) All rights reserved
