Parents upset as man flashes Overland Park children

Parents of students in the Shawnee Mission School District are on edge after students were sent home with a letter, warning of a man exposing himself to children.

Police said that they have extra patrol officers out on Friday and officers are out interviewing residents in an effort to develop leads.

KCTV5's Sandra Olivas spoke with the two teenage girls who were standing at the corner of West 91st Terrace and Robinson Street waiting for the school bus, when they said a man walked from behind the fence area of a nearby apartment and exposed himself to them.

The girls didn't want to go on camera, but they said the frightening incident happened on Friday morning at the corner.

The girls immediately told officials at their school about the bizarre encounter.

Then, Overland Park police said Wednesday night a man matching the same description exposed himself to another group of children at another apartment complex near West 85th and Grant streets.

The mother of those children looked out her window and saw what was happening and called police.

Officers have stepped up with patrols of the area, looking for the flasher.

The father of one of the kids who was a victim of the flasher described what his daughter went through.

"He came out, exposed himself in a sexual manner, not just exposing himself. And fortunately the bus came pretty quickly after that and they managed to get away in that fashion," said the dad, who wished to have his identity concealed to help protect his daughter.

The father said his daughter had one restless night, but is doing OK.

Another parent said she hopes families take extra precautions.

"It makes you worry that there's a child molester out there or someone that's able to do something to your child while they're at the bus stop," Michelle Alyea said. "So now, for parents, I think they need to start walking their children to the bus stop and stay there, just to be safe."

The suspect was described in both incidents as a white man, 20 to 30 years old, or middle aged, dark or brown hair, about 5'6" to 5'10" tall with a slender build. He was wearing a dark colored or black jacket and jeans. In one of the incidents the suspect was also described as wearing a black hat.

The Shawnee Mission School District sent a letter home with parents alerting them of the two incidents and said police will step up patrols in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Overland Park police at 913-895-6300.
