Olathe East teacher takes own life, is found in field

A former Olathe East High School teacher was found dead on Thursday night in a field in De Soto.

John Derby, 46, was a subject in a police investigation according to the authorities. The Overland Park police are continuing that investigation.

The sheriff’s office has confirmed that his wounds were self-inflicted and that he took his own life.

According to the school district’s website, Derby taught jewelry, metals, and ceramics in the art department.
