On Friday, Nordstrom, Inc. announced that they plan to relocate from Oak Park Mall to The Plaza.
The new store is expected to take up about 116,000 square feet and is expected to open in 2021.
Nordstrom will keep serving customers at its current location at the mall in Overland Park, Kansas until they relocate to The Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.
Nordstrom's Oak Park Mall store opened in 1998 and was the company's first store in Kansas.
"We've been fortunate to be able to serve our customers in this market at Oak Park Mall for the past 20 years and look forward to offering them a new shopping experience at Country Club Plaza," said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom. "Kansas City continues to be a terrific market for us. We want to grow our business here, which means we need to invest in bringing our customers the best we have to offer when it comes to both our digital capabilities and our physical locations. By building a new store, we're excited to provide a new experience that makes shopping with us even more convenient."
"The addition of a new Nordstrom store advances Taubman and Macerich's promise to create a modern, point-of-difference experience on the Plaza," said William S. Taubman, chief operating officer, Taubman Centers, Inc. "Exciting new retail and dining will ensure the district's future success and that it remains the crown jewel of the market."
Taubman Centers, Inc. and The Macerich Company jointly own and manage the 15-block, 1.3 million-square-foot, mixed-use retail and office property located in KC.
At the time of publication, neither the mall, The Plaza, nor the company had given a concrete reason for the move or talked about the specifics of it. However, the mall said that they knew it was coming and are already planning different things for the space.
Nordstrom did say, "We’re constructing a new store from the ground-up. We don’t have additional details to share at this time." They also added, "Because the opening for the new store is still several years out, we haven’t yet made our staffing plans. We’ll share details directly with our employees as soon as we can."
"Overland Park has a tremendous partnership with CBL Properties, owners of Oak Park Mall," Mayor Carl Gerlach said. "Although we have nearly three years before Nordstrom’s move to a smaller storefront, CBL has already begun evaluating alternative uses for the Nordstrom building. We look forward to working with CBL as plans unfold. Oak Park Mall is not only a premier retail center in the metropolitan area, but also in the nation and we have no doubt it will maintain that market position and continue to attract high-quality tenants moving forward."
People who live near the mall said they may not go all the way to The Plaza.
“I’m not a driver at all, so I probably would not go to Nordstrom the store," Paige said. "I would have to turn to online shopping as well.”
She was not the only person to tell KCTV5 News that they shop on Nordstrom's website more than at their store.
Some other people are looking forward to it, however, especially those on The Plaza.
“That’s exciting," Macey Johnson said. “I mean, I go there anytime I can. So, if there is one closer, I would be there.”
“It would be a really awesome addition to this area," Nate Anderson said. “I was a little concerned over the past few years with a lot of stores closing in the area that it would kind of become a desert, so it’s nice that a big chain would be coming in.”
Nordstrom currently operates 18 Nordstrom stores and 44 Nordstrom Rack stores in the Midwest.
