With temperatures in the upper 90s and the heat index in the triple digits, libraries and community centers are offering air-conditioned relief from the potentially dangerous heat.

Extreme heat results in hundreds of deaths every year and even more heat-related illnesses. In fact, the National Weather Service says extreme heat is the top cause of weather-related deaths.

Outdoor job sites, unairconditioned homes and sports venues top the deadliest locations list for heat-related issues. Those venturing outdoors are advised to wear light colored clothing, as light colors reflect energy from the sun instead of absorbing it.

As a reminder, neighbors should check on neighbors, especially elderly people who do not have air conditioning.

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment recommends people drink more fluids, wear lightweight clothing and stay indoors, if possible.

Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services offers an interactive map of cooling locations throughout the state.

All five counties in the Kansas City metro area have a number of cooling centers available for patrons to use to try and beat the heat.

The Salvation Army Community Centers will operate as cooling shelters when the Kansas City Health Department declares a heat emergency. When a heat advisory is in effect, all of their community centers are encouraged to operate as a cooling shelter. They will be open 10-4 p.m. Monday thru Friday, and 10-1 p.m. on Sundays.
