ST. LOUIS (KCTV) -- For the first time, incumbent Democratic Senator from Missouri Claire McCaskill faced off in a debate with her challenger, who is the current Missouri Attorney General, Republican Josh Hawley.

The debate took place in St. Louis and was hosted by the Missouri Press Association.

Hawley and McCaskill were joined by two other contenders from minor parties.

Debate questions spanned a wide variety of topics from Supreme Court nominees, to healthcare, the current administration’s approach to the trade war, to how recently implemented tariffs impact Missouri residents, especially farmers.

There are no scheduled debates following Friday’s event, but Hawley and McCaskill have agreed to have two more debates at some point. One will be in KC.

Both Democrats and Republicans are laser-focused on the senate race as it could very well determine which party takes control in the senate after the midterm election.
