2000 Honda Accord

(Meredith) - A vehicle inspector in North Carolina said his Honda Accord reached 1 million miles, proving that taking good care of a vehicle can go a long way.

Dexter Mills, of Durham, posted a photo of the car's odometer to Facebook after it hit 999,999 miles. He said the 2000 Honda Accord has since surpassed the million-mile mark.

"This car has been absolutely fantastic!" said Mills, who bought the car brand new.

It became his primary work vehicle in 2006 after his wife purchased a new car, according to local outlet WRAL-TV.

He told the station that he uses the Honda Accord to travel to various auto shops across the state and logs about 65,000 miles a year.

Mills has replaced the engine twice -- at 375,000 and 695,000 miles. As a former automotive technician, he saved a lot of money by doing most of the maintenance himself.

Now, he plans to upgrade to an SUV, seeing as his Honda Accord is ready to retire.

"Once my car went over one million miles, one of the warning lights would intermittently flash," he wrote on Facebook. "A quick diagnostic check didn’t show any abnormalities. I think I got the message."

Mills also shared some advice with his fellow drivers, stressing the importance of regular oil changes and driving in a "non-aggressive manner."
