Police are investigating a homicide that happened Saturday night.

The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Jarrod O’Donnell.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of North 127th Street. When officers arrived, they found O’Donnell who had died in a residence. He had been shot in the abdomen.

Those inside the house told KCTV5 News of repeated encounters when O’Donnell assaulted his ex-girlfriend, and court records back those claims up. She says that this latest incident could have ended with her dead had it not been for a friend that was in the house.

Kelly O’Donnell says her brother saw a post his ex-girlfriend posted on social media and he drove to the house. Jarrod O’Donnell 's ex-girlfriend says he parked away from the house and then broke into the back threatening to kill her.

Kelly O’Donnell says another man in the house had a gun and tried to stop her brother, but during the struggle, he ended up shot. For her, the news of her brother’s death came as a complete surprise.

"I was in shock. I had just talked to him the day before he passed and he was telling me that he ... had been responding through text messages (with his ex-girlfriend). And so, when I got the call and found out how he was shot and why he was shot, it didn't make sense to me," she said.

Police haven’t released much information related to the shooting. They are asking anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
