MIAMI COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -- The authorities are investigating after two people were killed in an accident involving a train.
This happened around 6:30 p.m. at Ridgeview Road and Wagstaff Road.
The rural area is just south of W. 255th Street, east of 169 Highway. It is technically in Miami County. For general landmarks, it's south of Spring Hill and east of Hillsdale Reservoir.
According to the authorities, the victims are an elderly from the greater Kansas City metro area.
They were reportedly heading out from having Thanksgiving dinner with their family when the accident happened. Tragically, their adult son apparently showed up at the scene after the accident happened.
Right now, the authorities think a slow-moving freight train struck the vehicle. It pushed it a considerable distance down the tracks while trying to stop. Somewhere along the way, the vehicle caught fire.
The investigation is ongoing, which includes checking that the lights and bells were working at the railroad crossing.
“This is an emotional call for anybody involved in this," said Capt. Matthew Kelly with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. "Not just for the family but also for us on scene. Nobody wants to go to these calls. These are very traumatic for anybody involved. Anybody that has anything to do with this. I think it makes it even more traumatic on a holiday like this.”
He also said a representative has visited with the family to check on their needs and see how they can help. They'll be checking with the first responders to check on their wellbeing, too.
