OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -- Kansas City knows Mike Kennedy from Q104 and Sunday night he’s watching the Grammys with less of an ear for the next hot artist and more from the standpoint of a proud papa.

“If you hear the song, you hear the echo female voice, that’s my daughter,” Kennedy said.

The song he’s talking about is Tequila by Grammy nominated, and winner, Dan and Shay. Not only does Abby, who graduated from Shawnee Mission East and Mizzou, sing on the hit, she’s married to Dan.

“They got married two years ago this coming May,” Kennedy voiced.

Kennedy met Dan Smyers before his daughter when Dan and Shay stopped by the Q104 studios to visit and sing. Dan would later meet Abby in Nashville where Abby worked for Warner Brothers.

So how did dad feel about his little girl dating a rising musician?

“You always have that initial thought and a lot of them like to have a lot of fun, but Dan is a tremendous young man, a respectful young man and they really have a great relationship. He’s a great kid,” Kennedy explained.

And he is talented. Kennedy says it’s been a blast hearing the hits before they’re released and says watching the band’s success has made their whole family very proud.

“I’m so happy for him, so thrilled for her, he’s worked super hard and she’s been a huge supporter, it’s thrilling for both of them,” Kennedy stated.

Dan and Shay took home the Grammy for Best Country Duo Performance Sunday night.
