The Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrested the Franklin County sheriff and one of his top deputies on Wednesday.

Wyandotte County booking logs show that Jerrod Fredricks was arrested for interference with law enforcement operations, a felony, and Jeffry Curry was arrested for official misconduct, a misdemeanor, and interference with law enforcement operations.

Franklin County attorney Stephen Hunting said in a press conference Wednesday that Curry currently holds the office of Franklin County sheriff and Fredricks currently holds the position of sheriff's deputy and public information officer for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Hunting said he appointed the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office as special prosecutor in this matter in September. Their investigation with the KBI led to the charges against Fredricks and Curry.

Hunting said he removed himself and his office from the criminal investigation and proceedings.

Hunting also said his office has filed a petition for ouster to remove Curry as Franklin County sheriff because of the criminal charges against him. He said the details of the petition won't be released because they are sealed by a court order.

"After my review of the evidence provided to me by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office and in light of the criminal charges filed by the special prosecutor, the petition for ouster is appropriate and necessary," Hunting said. "I take no joy in this decision ... I am asking publicly for Mr. Jeff Curry to resign as sheriff."

If Curry doesn't immediately resign and the ouster proceedings continue, he will remain sheriff until a final decision is made. While he is in custody, the Franklin County Clerk will assume the duties and role of sheriff.

The two will have their first court appearance in Franklin County District Court on March 6 at 11 a.m.

Fredricks' bond was set at $1,500, and Curry's was set at $3,000. The two men posted bail hours after their arrest.
