memorial for firefighters

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -- Three years ago today, two firefighters were killed battling a massive building fire.

On Friday, the memorial where that happened served as place to remember the lives of Larry Leggio and John Mesh.

While the lot sits empty, toward the side is a small memorial of flowers and mementos created by the public.

It’s how the KC metro honors the sacrifice two firefighters made three years ago and lets their families know they’re not forgotten.

Fire investigators determined the fire Mesh and Leggio died battling was arson.

The woman convicted of starting the fire is Thu Hong Nguyen. She was found guilty of murder, arson and assault.

However, two days ago, she was back the Jackson County Court filing an appeal.

Nguyen is currently serving a 74-year prison sentence as community members still come to the memorial to honor the firefighters killed.
