Police are trying to figure out how a box truck ran over two people in downtown Merriam.
Paramedics rushed to the aid of the two victims, who were employees of IBT Inc., 9400 W. 55th St., shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
One person suffered life-threatening injuries while the second suffered serious injuries.
The accident happened near 55th Street and Merriam Drive just north of Johnson Drive, which is an access road in a business district.
"The truck driver was leaving the business and a couple of employees were out smoking, and the truck driver managed to run over two employees," Lt. Mike Daniels said.
Daniels said it is unclear how the driver missed seeing the two men smoking near the curb and how the men didn't see the truck leaving the business that is familiar with late afternoon deliveries.
"It would not have been something strange for a box truck to be driving through here," he said.
Investigators blocked off the access road and mapped out the scene with the help of the truck driver after briefly interviewing him.
"He said that he was making the delivery, he went to leave, felt a bump and stopped," Daniels said.
Police said the area was not very well lit, and that was another thing they'll be looking into as the investigation progresses.
