A 17-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in the fatal stabbing of Deandrea R. Vine, who was found dead in South Kansas City last weekend after being stabbed multiple times.

Xzavier C. McDowell, 17, faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence.

According to court records, police found the 27-year-old Vine outside a house in the 8500 block of East 92nd Street on July 28.

She had been stabbed multiple times and a vehicle in the driveway had a large amount of blood inside it.

Earlier that day, family members said they had seen Vine with a younger man with a backpack.

Family members said Vine had met the young man at work. Also, management at that work location told police she had been in a relationship with a man identified as McDowell.

McDowell told police he had been at Vine's house the night she was stabbed to death.

He stated he stabbed her several times because "she had to die."

According to him, he then fled and hid the knife. When he got home, he took a shower and burned the clothes he was wearing in the backyard.

After obtaining a search warrant, police found traces of blood in McDowell’s residence and what appeared to be ashes from clothing in the backyard.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000 cash.
