(Meredith) – A 14-year-old Louisiana high school football player died of COVID-19 Wednesday.

According to WBRZ, Patrick Sanders, a freshman at Baker High School near Baton Rouge, died.

The entire football team is now in quarantine, and the high school is moving to all-virtual learning, beginning now through Sept. 7.

A jamboree planned for Thursday was canceled. Three other students at the school have tested positive for COVID-19.

Baker Mayor Darnell Waites said in a statement, “The loss of such a young life is always a tragedy and the preventable loss of that young life is heartbreaking.”

It is unclear if Sanders was vaccinated, though children 12 and older are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines nationwide.
