Pedestrian killed after suspected drunk driver jumps curb, hits Kansas City billboard
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A pedestrian is dead and a driver is in custody after a violent crash on Troost Ave., Kansas City police say.
The Kansas City Police Department says officers were called to the area of 77th and Troost Ave. around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, after reports of a crash.
According to investigators, a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee was headed north on Troost from 80th St. when the driver left the roadway just before 77th Terr.
Investigators indicate that the Jeep entered a grassy area on the east side of the street, then continued onto the sidewalk - where a pedestrian had been.
KCPD adds that the Jeep hit the pedestrian, throwing him into a utility pole before he fell into the roadway.
The vehicle did not stop there. Police say the Jeep continued moving, became airborne and struck a billboard.
Investigators note that the Jeep rotated around 180 degrees and came to rest on its side in front of a nearby business.
Both the driver and the pedestrian were transported to a nearby hospital, according to KCPD. The pedestrian later died from his injuries.
As of Thursday morning, police say the driver remains in custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.
No further information has been released. KCPD says this is its 22nd fatality crash in 2026.
