WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Kansas hero from the Korean War is being honored in an ongoing graphic novel series.

On Tuesday, September 23, the Association of the United States Army announced that its newest entry in the Medal of Honor graphic novel series will feature Father Emil Kapaun.

Born and raised in Kansas, Kapaun is the most decorated chaplain in Army history. Known for his courage and spiritual guidance, Kapaun stayed to treat the wounded when Chinese forces overwhelmed his unit during the Korean War.

Kapaun was sent to a prisoner of war camp, where he gave his rations to fellow soldiers and went against his captors to lead prayer meetings.

In 2013, Kapaun was awarded the nation’s highest military decoration: the Medal of Honor. He is also being considered for sainthood in the Catholic Church.
