KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The public assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is prompting leaders in Missouri to speak openly about the threat of political violence and how it is reshaping their work.

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R) of Missouri said he was stunned to learn of Kirk’s death, calling it a moment that should force people to reconsider their priorities.

“Politics is not (what’s) most important in life. It just isn’t,” Hawley said. “I hope that that part of (Kirk’s) legacy here will be a wake-up call to that.”

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, a Democrat from Missouri, described a growing unease among lawmakers from both parties.

“Republicans, Democrats, everybody in government are going to probably become more and more reclusive in an attempt to protect themselves,” Cleaver said.

He added that he takes threats seriously after being targeted himself.

“I have two people in federal prison right now who threaten to kill me, one in the super max in Colorado,” Cleaver said.

Republican Congressman Mark Alford confirmed to KCTV5 that he has decided to pause public events, including town halls, out of caution.

Last month, Alford made 15 stops to listen and speak in just four days, hearing directly from constituents. Now, he feels it is necessary to scale back.

“Our voices are the most important instrument to relay information and try to win someone over,” Alford said. “It’s not a gun, and it’s not especially from a sniper on a roof.”

Despite the heightened concerns, Hawley emphasized he will continue to meet with voters.

“This will not deter me from doing what I always do, and I hope that other people will take up (Kirk’s) mantle on both sides, you know, left and right,” he said.

Kansas Democratic Congressman Sharice Davids echoed sentiments of her colleagues in the House, saying “political violence is never the answer. My thoughts are with Charlie Kirk’s wife and children. I am grateful for the first responders and law enforcement who are investigating.”
