Girl hospitalized, 14-year-old boy killed in south Kansas City shooting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Police say two kids under the age of 16 were involved in a deadly shooting overnight into Sunday. They later identified one of the victims as a 14-year-old boy.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, officers were called to the 1700 block of E 97th Street around 12:15 a.m. on August 17.
A bystander told the officers that several people were arguing in a nearby parking lot when shots were fired. The people involved ran from the scene, while two went to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds.
KCPD said the victims, one boy and one girl, were both under the age of 16. The boy, later identified as 14-year-old Teandre Gibson, died at the hospital from his injuries.
The girl’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
The incident is being investigated as a homicide, and detectives do not currently have anyone in custody. It’s unclear how many people were involved.
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson released a statement on the shooting, calling it a “tragic loss” and urging parents to “teach our children that no disagreement is worth a life.”
