LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - An accidental car theft -- yes, you read that correctly -- was the subject of a recent phone call a man made to thank the Lawrence Police Department.

In audio shared Tuesday night with a disguised voice to hide the man’s identity, Lawrence Police shared a phone call from a man thanking officers for their professional work after he accidentally stole a car.

The Lawrence Police Department shared the audio as a public service announcement for drivers to lock their cars after the man said he apparently got into an identical car as his in the same parking lot.

Both owners apparently left their keys in the ignition, leading to one man jumping in the wrong vehicle and taking off.

“We’ve disguised his voice and cut out some details to protect identities, but it did give us a little chuckle and the opportunity to remind everyone to PLEASE LOCK your car. Ya never know!?” LPD wrote in a Facebook post.

Accidental Car Thief Calls Chief

The Chief is used to getting calls thanking our officers, but this is a first! A man accidentally steals a car!? Yep. The responding officer learned it was true. Apparently two identical cars were in the same lot and both owners left their keys in the ignition. You can guess what happened next. This man jumped in the wrong one and took off. We’ve disguised his voice and cut out some details to protect identities, but it did give us a little chuckle and the opportunity to remind everyone to PLEASE LOCK your car. Ya never know!?
