Al Fitzmorris, original Royal, dies at 78

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Al Fitzmorris, one of the original members of the Kansas City Royals franchise has died. He was 78.

Fitzmorris, who played eight of his 10 seasons in the MLB with the Royals, began his career when the Royals opened their franchise in 1969.

“We mourn the passing of Al Fitzmorris, an Original Royal who joined us in 1969, was an integral part of our first playoff team in 1976, and stayed in Kansas City after his playing days to raise a family while also remaining actively involved with our community efforts,” the organization said in a statement Wednesday night. “We send our condolences to Al’s loved ones and will miss Al dearly.”

Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. played with Fitzmorris on the Royals during the 70s. White released the following statement about his teammate’s passing.

Fitzmorris had a career 77-59 record and 3.65 ERA. He had 70 of his 77 career wins with Kansas City, before closing out his career with Cleveland and the California Angels.
