FAIRWAY, Kan. -- A wintry mix is falling around the metro area as earlier snows have given way to rain in the afternoon on Monday.KCTV5's Heather Staggers is reporting that in Leavenworth, Kan., there were wintry temperatures with showers falling at 4 p.m. She said there has not been any ice, just rainfall.Earlier this morning there was a thin blanket of snow, but that has been washed away by the rain.In St. Joseph, Mo., KCTV5's Bonyen Lee is reporting late-afternoon rain is turning snow from earlier in the day into slush. Earlier in the day, residents reported the rain turned to snow at about 8 a.m. and left about an inch of snow covering most of the lawns in town.The National Weather Service extended its winter weather advisory eastward into Douglas, Jefferson, Leavenworth and Franklin counties in Kansas, in addition to numerous counties west of the Lawrence area.The advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The weather service said 2 to 6 inches of snow are possible through the overnight hours. The National Weather Service said snow is expected to accumulate on grassy areas first before spreading to roads and making travel hazardous.The Kansas Department of Transportation said Monday morning that roads are snow-packed with ice in Atchison, Brown and Doniphan counties.
