KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Heat may have been to blame for two recent deaths, according to the Kansas City Health Department.Health officials wouldn’t say exactly when or where the deaths occurred. They didn’t release any other details.More than a dozen people have gone to hospitals throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area with heat-related symptoms during the recent heat wave, according to the health officials.
Medics rushed a Leawood, Kan., man to a hospital after he got overheated riding his riding lawn mower Monday and couldn't cool down."I came in and couldn't cool down," said Jim Edgington. "I had an ice pack on my forehead and was lying down, but I just wasn't recovering."Sunday, the Salvation Army helped a 105-year-old woman who lives off East 28th and Olive streets. When they spoke to her, she mentioned her air conditioner had broken. Not only that, but she had fallen and couldn't get back up.Volunteers called firefighters who went to the house and took her to a hospital."I knew this lady could not be left alone today with the heat as it is, without a working air conditioner," said volunteer Susan Clark.Monday, the woman remained hospitalized but was doing well, according to Clark. An excessive heat warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Kansas City area, despite some relief with the heat index expected to be down to 102 and rain possible.
