Medics Respond To Heat-Related Calls
Heat Index Expected To Be Above 100 Degrees Again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It has been extremely hot, and with the heat index expected to be above 100 degrees once again, there is a legitimate concern for some people's health.Volunteers call about 1,000 elderly folks all around the Kansas City metropolitan area during these hot days to make sure they are fine.Sunday, the Salvation Army helped a 105-year-old woman who lives off East 28th and Olive streets.When they spoke to her, she mentioned her air conditioner had broken.
Not only that, but she had fallen and couldn't get back up.Volunteers called firefighters who went to the house and took her to a hospital."I knew this lady could not be left alone today with the heat as it is, without a working air conditioner," said volunteer Susan Clark.Monday, the woman remained hospitalized but was doing well, according to Clark.During the weekend in the Kansas City area, medics responded to 24 heat-related calls, one at Kauffman Stadium during Sunday's Royals game.Johnson County, Kan., paramedics ran on 11 heat-related calls.Cooling stations were open throughout the city and suburbs.
