A 105-year-old woman was rescued from her midtown home Sunday.

A Salvation Army volunteer, part of a group of volunteers calling to check on more than 1,000 elderly, shut-in and disabled residents during the heat wave, found that the woman had no working air conditioning or fans.

"I knew this lady could not be left alone today with the heat as it is, without a working air conditioner," said volunteer Susan Clark.

Clark contacted her supervisor, then called the woman back to tell her they would send someone by to check on the air conditioner.

Two hours later, Clark called the woman again. The elderly woman said she had fallen and couldn't get up.

Clark called 911 and firefighter climbed in through a second-floor window to rescue the woman.

She was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK.
