Kansas Citians were already taking advantage of at least one Salvation Army cooling center Friday morning -- at East Ninth Street and Bellefontaine Avenue.

The Salvation Army opened several cooling centers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area for residents who need to spend some time in air-conditioning.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning through 8 p.m. Monday for much of the area.

Cold drinks and snacks also are available at the cooling centers, which will remain open through Monday. Click here for a list of the locations.

Libraries in Johnson County, Kan., also are open to people who need a break from the heat. Click here for more information about those facilities.

In addition to the cooling centers, Salvation Army representatives plan to call elderly and disabled people to check on them throughout the weekend.

They'll also pass out bottles of water to homeless people daily through Monday, starting at about 2:30 p.m. Friday.
