Amy's Storm Chasing Blog
Read along as KCTV5 News reporter Amy Anderson and KCTV5 News photographer Rob Karnes chase storms Thursday night.
9:10 p.m. - Now we're at Kansas Highway 10 and Interstate 435 coming back from Lawrence. What a strange sight to go from bright sunshine into the darkest skies you can imagine all within about 10 minutes. On the way back, we drove through incredibly heavy rain, the kind that makes driving nearly impossible. It's tough to see what's right in front of you. Definitely want to use extreme caution if you have to drive tonight.
8:17 p.m. - We are now leaving Lawrence. As we pull off campus, it's pouring rain and the sun is brightly shining. It's kind of strange. We are heading out to try and chase it some more and look for damage.
7:45 p.m. - After watching the storm form, we were caught in massive winds and the skies just opened up. What we're experiencing right now are torrential rains, lightning and thunder. The skies are brightening up now that the storm is passing. Before the storm arrived, it was so cool. We were able to stand outside and just watch it. Now we're stuck in our live truck for the rains and wind, waiting to see if we don't get some impressive hail out of this.
7:20 p.m. - All I can say is, wow! We are parked in the Lied Center parking lot just off the University of Kansas campus. The sky is incredible, lots of lowering, lightning, but no real rain yet. As I mentioned on the air, you know something's coming when the birds are literally flying at knee-level. We have a fantastic vantage point to watch this roll in.
It's 6:55 p.m. - We just got to Lawrence where there's a lot of lightning and it's beginning to sprinkle. The clouds are ominous, and there's quite a bit of lowering, however as Rob pointed out, there's no organization, just scattered looking clouds.
It's 6:30 p.m. - Once again photographer Rob Karnes and I are heading west toward Lawrence to catch the storms. Right now we're on Interstate 70 just east of Kansas Speedway. Nothing's here yet, but you can definitely see the skies to the west are darkening up. You can expect another update from us as we get closer to Lawrence.
