Powerful Storms Strike Kan., Mo. Again

Missouri River Spills Over Banks Around Metro Area

A line of powerful thunderstorms produced large hail and strong winds across central and eastern Kansas and into Missouri last night.

Hail nearly three inches in diameter damaged a building and six cars at the state prison in El Dorado, east of Wichita. Up to an inch-and-a-half of rain in 30 minutes swamped Kansas City.

The storms popped up in central Kansas in the late afternoon and moved northeast toward Missouri. The National Weather Service reported winds up to 80 miles per hour and golf-ball sized hail in some areas.

The slow-moving storms caused street flooding across eastern Kansas and western Missouri, areas already saturated from big storms that passed through on Thursday.

The entrance to the English Landing Park in Parkville was closed Sunday night as the Missouri River spilled into nearby creeks, filling them well over capacity.

High water from the Missouri River was also over the bank in Atchison. An entrance to a boat dock was flooded and debris jammed at a bridge footing. In Leavenworth, a park along the river bank was under water by Sunday night.

The storms also downed trees and power poles across the area, knocking out power in Eudora, Kan., and Lincoln, Mo.

A grain bin in Girard, Mo., was destroyed by 70 mph winds, and winds estimated at 55 to 65 mph destroyed a barn and a shed in Fillmore.
