The Route 2 bridge over the Grand River east of Freeman, Mo., is now closed and could affect those heading to the Missouri lakes.

Route 2 is a popular route for lake-goers from south Kansas City, Mo., and Johnson County, Kan.

Contractors are replacing the deck and Missouri Department of Transportation officials said they will reopen the route as soon as possible. The bridge is scheduled to reopen by late August and MoDOT said it hopes to minimize impact on school bus detouring for classes in the Cass Midway School.

Detours for the bridge closure can be found on the MoDOT Web site by going here.

The Route 2 bridge is is the last of four MoDOT bridges in Cass County to be repaired this year through the MoDOT Safe & Sound program. MoDOT has completed and reopened Route O over the Grand River five miles south of Freeman, and Route O over Poney Creek in Freeman.

The bridges are among 19 in Cass County and more than 800 throughout Missouri to be repaired or replaced in the next five years through the Safe & Sound bridge program.
