Leavenworth police are investigating after a fatal wreck late Monday.

Investigators were at the scene in the Leavenworth neighborhood close to the federal penitentiary for several hours after the crash happened just before midnight.

They said the wreck happened in the 1300 block of Cheyenne Street, where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

A man who lives on that street and saw the crash happen told KCTV5's Christina Medina that the man sped down the road in a black Chevrolet Blazer and hit a parked car, which caused him to flip the SUV. He hit his head and was pinned under his vehicle.

Garrett Trexler, 26, the driver of the SUV, died at the scene.

The witness said drivers speed down this stretch of road all the time. He said this was the second wreck this month.
