GPS Helps Police Find Couple’s Stolen Cars

Couple Followed Home From Car Wash

GM’s OnStar system, which includes GPS service, helped authorities track down two cars stolen from a Shawnee couple.

The husband and wife, who didn’t want to be identified, told KCTV5 News that someone had followed them home from a car wash about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Two passengers got out of the car and robbed the couple at gunpoint in their driveway at 72nd Street and Mullen Road, police said.

“Crime can happen anywhere,” said Shawnee police Capt. Bill Hisle.

The two men stole the couple’s sport utility vehicle and their new pickup truck.

But they had OnStar in the Chevrolet Tahoe, so police used the technology to find the cars parked outside an apartment complex in Kansas City. The stereos had been ripped out, but the OnStar was still intact.

“I don't know if crooks are wise enough to know what OnStar does,” Hisle said.

Police said they have not found the men who took the cars.

Police said that if you think someone is following you, don’t go home but instead go to a police station or somewhere where you can call the police.
