A 10-year-old boy was being treated at a hospital after a bike wreck in Leavenworth on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the boy, Michael Gilbert, rode through a red light into an intersection while he was riding with his brother. They said a driver of a truck passing through did everything possible to stop, but the truck and the bicycle collided.

"The truck came screeching and going sideways, and the boy ran straight into it. Then the trailer ran over the boy," said witness Richard Merkel.

The boy was taken by ambulance to St. John's Hospital in Leavenworth, then flown by LifeFlight to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where he was upgraded Thursday from critical to serious condition.
