GRANDVIEW, Mo. -- A child died and 12 people -- who appeared to be Amish or Mennonite -- were injured Friday in a wreck on U.S. Highway 71.A Chevrolet Trailblazer and a Dodge Van collided and the van lost control, hit a concrete barrier and overturned, according to a news release from Grandview police.Thirteen people were riding in the van. Some of them were not wearing seat belts and were ejected. Others had to be cut from inside the vehicle. One person was flown by helicopter to a hospital and 12 people were taken by ambulances to five area hospitals.
The people ranged in age from four months to 74.It wasn’t immediately clear whether the 4-month-old was the child who died or if it was another child involved.Four of the injured people were in critical condition Friday evening. Two were in serious condition, and six were treated and released. An official who was at the scene, Terry Magelssen, said the people were reluctant to go to hospitals."Recognizing that there was a religious element to this, they were very hesitant for medical help, very hesitant to be flown in a helicopter, so we were taxed with just trying to educate them rapidly and get everybody where they needed to go," Magelssen said. They were believed to be from the Franklin and Tomah areas of Wisconsin. The driver of the Trailblazer was either uninjured or suffered only minor injuries, because that person did not receive medical treatment.
