INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Spc. Joel Bertoldie died 15 years ago in Iraq, but a small piece of him lives on through a Springfield man who met Bertoldie’s family for the first time today.

It was a moment years in the making, ever since Andy Lyon found a bracelet laying on the ground outside his apartment.

It was a “killed in action bracelet” with the name of Bertoldie's son, Joel.

Instead of throwing it away, Lyon kept it around his neck to honor the soldier.

The Navy veteran always wanted to meet Joel's family.

“I believe he and Andy found each other,” Bertoldie said.

For Lyon, Friday’s meeting was a glimpse into Bertoldie's life.

“It felt like I was watching my own son,” Lyon said.

“It brings my son closer to me,” Debi Bertoldie said. “I didn't think that was possible, but that's what it's done.”

The Bertoldie family doesn't know how that bracelet got to Springfield or who threw it away, but they're glad Lyon found it.

There is a memorial bearing his name in downtown independence.

Lyon said finding the bracelet changed his life. We’ll tell you how in a special report later this August.
