KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The police are investigating after a suspect jumped off a bridge at I-435 and 210 Highway.

The police said they did not anticipate the man jumping off the bridge while he was in handcuffs.

Kansas City, Missouri police said that the officers who were called to I-435 and Front Street were following protocol when they put two people in handcuffs at about 9 a.m.

The man and woman were found running through highway traffic.

When police were escorting the pair to a car, however, the man ran from officers.

What is under investigation is whether the police had a chance to talk the man out of jumping.

“I don’t know, I mean, things happened pretty quickly,” said Captain Lionel Colon with the KCPD. “It wouldn’t be expected for that behavior to be exhibited. But it did and it’s unfortunate.”

“It would be unusual to expect someone to necessarily respond that way, in that situation, as far as running when there was nowhere to run," he said.

On Thursday night, the man who died was identified as 43-year-old Michael Barnett.

The woman has been cooperating with police.

Kathy Cobb, a woman who spoke to KCTV5 News, said it all happened very fast. She said it didn’t happen in minutes, but in seconds.

She said she was driving by on her way to work and saw the man jump off a bridge near the Missouri River.

“I saw this man and this woman handcuffed,” Cobb said, “and it looked like he was going to jump, then he did.”
