KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A new shop aims to help cancer patients maintain a positive outlook while undergoing treatment.

On Thursday at Research Medical Center, there was an open house for Verda's Place, which has a special meaning for all of us at KCTV5 News.

Verda’s Place is what’s called “an appearance center” and it’s named after Verda Salberg, one of our colleagues at KCTV5 who lost her second battle with breast cancer last year.

The shop provides things like wigs, post-surgery bras, and lymphedema garments. They are all available at no cost for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

Thursday was its grand opening.

The funds that made it happen came from Bra Couture, an organization Salberg was passionate about.

Salberg was one of the cancer survivors who walked down the runway at their first fundraiser.

Her family asked for donations to Bra Couture in lieu of flowers upon her death and there were more than $30,000 in contributions made in her memory.

“I just couldn’t let that money melt into our other funds and not be visible to her friends and family who made that donation,” said Sharon Payne, Bra Couture KC’s founder.

“The very first time I heard that Sharon wanted to do this and name it after my wife, obviously we were very honored by it, very humbled,” said John Salberg.

When we saw her at work, we were struck by how she seemed to always be smiling. She looked calm and confident, even in the face of a stage four metastatic diagnosis.
