A mother of a child critically injured in Independence is now facing charges.

Jorden Schulenberg, 20, was charged Wednesday with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Court records state authorities were dispatched to Children's Mercy Hospital earlier this month on a reported child abuse case.

Carlos Alaniz, 19, was charged soon after with abuse or neglect of a child.

Alaniz admitted to punching the child in the torso because it wouldn't stop crying, court records state.

According to court documents, the mother was charged after "failing to seek medical treatment and leaving the child with another adult who allegedly beat the child."

A $50,000 bond has been requested.
