INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

It’s never too early for parents to start thinking about getting their children ready for school.

And on Wednesday, the Independence School District is helping parents do just that.

Starting at 9 a.m., Independence school leaders are offering free Pre-K screenings for all families in the district, in an effort to match each child with the best program for them.

Officials say the tests are not difficult. Instructors will assess basic academic skills by asking children to point to a certain color to see if they can match words with pictures.

There will also be motor writing, hearing and vision tests as part of the screenings. The district says the screening should take about 30 minutes.

Officials ask that parents bring four items to the screening, including the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, family proof of income and residence.

“We are serving the entire community. The most vulnerable kiddos that we can, getting them ready for school and helping them understand expectations and helping them be successful,” Head Start Director Patti White said.

The cost for Pre-K programs can cost nearly $155 a week but, for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch, the programs could also be free.

"We know parents are their first teachers and we want to partner with them to give the kids the best leg up we could,” White said.

School officials recommend parents make an appointment to avoid a long wait but say they will not be turning anyone away.
