KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas City family is lucky to be alive and say it's all thanks to the quick reaction of their 16-year-old daughter.

The family was forced from their home early Friday morning after a fire at a nearby vacant home spread to the house where they were sleeping.

The fire started at about 2:10 a.m. at a vacant home in the 3700 block of E 68th Street.

When fire crews arrived, the fire had spread and flames were seen at both homes.

Officials say two adults and two children were inside the home.

16-year-old Ari'yon Owens and her younger brother were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when she saw something bright outside her window.

“I don’t know why but I went to go close the window and it was bright so I was just thinking it was fireworks because I heard popping,” Ari'yon said.

But it wasn't fireworks. It was the house next door.

Ari'yon says she could feel the heat from the flames inside her room. That's when her instincts kicked in and she yelled for her family to wake up. All four people and their dog were able to escape safely.

After firefighters put out the flames, the family was allowed back inside their home. They say they have lost everything but have the most important thing.

"I think we can start over start fresh. At least we have everyone that was inside the house, out," Ari'yon said.

Ari'yon says she plans to get a job to help her mom rebuild.

The American Red Cross has been asked to assist the family. The vacant home next door was already condemned.
