NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A mother is pleading for others to stay safe and be more careful after her son drowned while swimming in Percy Priest Lake on Friday.

Emergency responders recovered 19-year-old Corey Polk from the water just before 10:30 p.m.

His mother, Cherita Okoro, said her son lost his footing while climbing rocks above the water with his brother.

Now she's asking others to be more cautious and stay away from the dangerous area if they're looking for a casual day of swimming.

"Please, that water and that current, you don't know the depth of that water," Okoro said. "If you just want to swim, go to a local swimming pool not this big, open body of water."

Corey's brother tried to rescue him but ended up having to be rescued himself because he couldn't swim.

Crews from Nashville Fire Dept. and EMS search the water for hours before recovering Corey's body.

Okoro said she felt some peace when her son was finally found.

"[I'm] miserable, but a little relieved that my son is now able to come home," she said. "We know where he is, so we are relieved for that much of it."
