KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The number of possible measles exposure locations is growing.

There are now four confirmed cases of measles in Kansas City, including a resident who attends Warren Hills Elementary in the Liberty School District. The Clay County Health Department doesn’t believe anyone at the school was exposed, because the student was absent from school while contagious.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is working together with the Kansas City Health Department to notify people of two new locations where they could have possibly been exposed to measles.

Known locations where exposures may have occurred include the following:

  • The KCI Expo Center Midwest Parent Educators Vendor Hall on April 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Nebraska Furniture Mart on April 10 from 9:30 a.m - 2 p.m.

Measles is highly contagious and transmitted by coming into contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing. The virus can remain infectious in the air for two hours after the infected person leaves the room. Symptoms generally include a rash that appears 7-21 days after exposure.

“There tends to be an end for these types of things. We have different outbreaks situations every year whether it involves food and environment, E. coli or listeria or it involves things like mumps or influenza outbreak or increased cases in influenza season. So, certainly, we do see an end it’s hard to really say when the end will be, however,"  Dr. Dana Hawkinson, an infectious disease physician at the University of Kansas Health System, said.

Hawkinson urges everyone to get vaccinated. He says they are highly effective and easily protects you from infections like measles.
