Police determine cause of death after woman's body is found at 80th, The Paseo

Posted: Updated:

Police were being tight-lipped about a body found in the back of a U-Haul on Wednesday night.

Police found the woman’s body in the cargo space of a U-Haul in the area of 80th Street and The Paseo around 5 or 6 p.m.

She was pronounced dead by the Kansas City Fire Department.

People who talked to KCTV5 News on Thursday in the Marlborough Neighborhood said the U-Haul was sitting there for several days.

“When we were leaving, we saw a bunch of cop cars and they had the street blocked off with the caution tape, and we saw the U-Haul truck,” said John Toney, a supervisor at Vee’s Sweets and Treats, which is less than a block from where the body was found. “We saw a bunch of cops surrounding the U-Haul truck, but we didn’t exactly know what was going on.”

"It was just parked there," he said. "I didn’t think anything of it. We see cars parked there all the time.”

"I was just shocked," he said. "I didn’t expect that. I thought it was a truck that somebody just parked there.”

Initially, the police classified it as a suspicious death and said they were investigating.

At 5 p.m. on Thursday, the police department said that a medical examiner had ruled that the woman's cause of death was suicide.

They have not released any identifying information identifying the woman found dead.
